Stubaluna
From time to time, we have messages that come into our lives that teach us some small truth. Stubs is one of those gifts. This little pup had a very difficult birth, and I thought I was going to lose her. The smallest of nine puppies, she suffered from neurological disabilities because of the lack of oxygen on her way into this world. She could suckle but couldn't hang on long enough to get a full meal, as her head wobbled too much. When she tried to crawl, she would just tip over, legs flailing in the air. However, that didn't stop her....as long as she was fighting, we would, too! She never gave up, and each day there were small improvements. To be sure she got enough to eat, we would give her alone time with mama dog, and she quickly put on weight.Born without a tail, she was soon dubbed "Stubs", and it stuck.
We were told not to get attached to her, as she would not likely survive. However, Stubs had a will to live, and her indomitable spirit pushed her through the handicaps she endured. It was hard to watch her learn to walk and run because at the slightest touch, over she would go!
Stubs was three to four months' old at the time of the painting. She is now 2 1/2 years old, and you would never know how tenuous her early life had been. She is one of the smartest dogs I have ever been with. She is so happy and cheerful that she's not able to see the world in any other way. Her sense of play and enthusiasm for everything she does is truly an inspiration.
From her I have learned that life is a gift--no matter what--to be enjoyed every moment to the fullest, regardless of the obstacles before us. |
